I took the opportunity to visit the Sharmanka exhibition at the new Trongate 103 gallery during the Doors Open day in Glasgow. I don't know quite what I was expecting but the exhibition was incredible, I can safely say I've never seen anything quite like it (outwith some of my more fanciful dreams). As an installation the still image doesn't do it justice it really has to be seen in context, moving and accompanied by the music. The eeiry lighting and jagged mechanical movements only add to the strange quality of the figures and industrial objects. Of course I had to buy the catalogue and the DVD. Having carried out some research I've realised that Sharmanka is part of a movement of automata-makers. You can see examples of other makers work at the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, but in the meantime if you're in the Glasgow Cross area I'd encourage you to go and see it for yourself.
