Digging for Fire

I see the night sky as a jewellery store window and my mind is half a brick

At Last a Decent Web Design Magazine!

Netmag I've tended to ignore most of the web magazines on the newsagent shelves, they seem to cater mainly for hobbiests and didn't really reflect what was going on in the web community. As a result I was pleasantly surprised by the latest redesigned issue of .Net. Check it out!

Does this mean that their web site is next in line for a refit?

Also worth nipping over to Jon Hick's comments on his contribution.

Below the Fold

Derek Powazek has redesigned his site with his main navigation positioned at the bottom of the page. In his post on the new design he describes his rational as follows:
Take the usual site: The top is crowded with navigation, the middle is primarily devoted to the main content, with about a third of the vertical space devoted to distracting sidebar items. Those sidebar items are great for readers who just aren't engaged in whatever they're reading. They can skim down a paragraph or two and then link away to the next thing. But do you really want to optimize your site for the least engaged?
Can't fault the rational! It took me back to Matt Jone's Fruit at the Bottom post about the exploratory work he did at the BBC.
Another interesting take on the problem is Shaun Inman's expanding navigation solution.
